Finding Grace

I consider myself a man of faith, even tho flawed, fighting with guilt and shame, and often lacking in self-esteem - like many recovering addicts do. This book caught my eye as I looked around the bookstore at Franciscan University recently. It intrigued me as I often look for assurance that I am not the worst SOB that ever walked the face of the earth, and that I may have some redeeming qualities - which I know I have, I just have trouble convincing myself sometimes. (Note: the author is NOT Catholic, if that matters.) I am very glad I bought it, read it, and I now recommend it. It is extremely helpful in understanding ourselves, the tricks our minds play on us while captured by an addiction, and our "Higher Power's" grace for us. Being a veteran of a couple 12 Step Programs, my Higher Power has been God for many years. I have known about His Grace, but this book has helped me more fully accept that Grace into my life and my recovery. I plan to purchase several copies of this book to put in my church's library, and to share with my friends who I know are stuck in similar circumstances as I. IMHO, this book is a "MUST" read for any addict in recovery, (regardless of what you are recovering from - alchol, drugs, sex, etc), and for those who wish to help an addict on the recovery journey.
In other words, I think anyone can grow in understanding self, and can intellectualy and Spiritually prosper by reading this book.

This book is helpful to me. I become aware of the fact that all people have addictions (I only thought this before, I have never read anything on addictions that confirmed it until this book.) Though I am not finished reading it yet, I plan to read it again to absorb every bit of help from it. GOD is GREAT and He has gifted different people with different gifts and Gerald May seems gifted in knowing the grace of GOD.

I guess I was hoping for a book that contained more intuitive insight instead of the simple rehashing of religious doctrine. There is more to spirituality than Judeo-Christian myth. It seems that most "Christians" believe that the only way out of addiction is through religious dogma.

This is a spiritual look into the world of addiction. Religious matters do come into play. Good book for research or group discussion in church settings. Good insight into the struggle many suffer from and good for methods of self help.
